Throughout his career James Sawyer’s practice has focused on general civil litigation.  He has tried cases in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and in many state courts.  He has argued cases in three of the four New York State Appellate Divisions, the New York State Court of Appeals, the First and Second United States Circuit Courts of Appeals, and the United States Tax Court.

Concerning business law and related matters, Jim’s litigation experience includes matters involving closely held business entity shareholder/partnership disputes, purchase and sale agreements, operating agreements, dissolution fights, injunctions, employment agreements, restrictive covenants, Uniform Commercial Code issues, tax and pension matters, trade secrets, estate, bankruptcy, fraud, appraisal, accounting, slander and insurance issues, and a wide range of contract disputes.

Jim’s real estate litigation and transactional experience includes purchase and sale agreements, financing agreements, leases, options, easements, brokerage agreements, loan documents, mortgage foreclosures, mechanic’s lien foreclosures, construction contract and title insurance matters.

Jim has litigated many complex medical malpractice cases.  These cases have involved lead poisoning, misdiagnosis of various medical conditions, improperly performed surgery, suicide, over prescription of medication, failure to refer for consultation by specialists, misinterpretation of radiological studies, prescribing wrong medication, plastic surgery, colon surgery, administration of respiratory therapy, leaving foreign objects in the patient’s body, appendicitis, bowel obstruction, failure to diagnosis cancer, ophthalmology error, testicular torsion, ectopic pregnancy, asthma, orthopedic surgery, emergency room medicine, psychiatric treatment and many other areas. 

Clients have included commercial real estate brokers, large and small construction companies, national and local retailers, freight forwarders, automobile dealerships, insurance companies, and attorneys.

Jim Sawyer graduated from St. John’s University School of Law in 1969, Dean’s List, was admitted to the Bar at age 24, and has been engaged in a general civil litigation and transactional practice ever since. 

Jim is a member of the American, New York State and Nassau County Bar Associations, the American Association for Justice and New York State Trial Lawyer’s Association.

Away from the office Jim enjoys reading, photography, golf, travel, hiking, movies and theatre.  His favorite time is spent with family.
